>> the skills and levelsThere are 100 character levels and 1000 skill levels in SAO. While the character levels do very little to increase the character's power, they do increase the character's potential for growth. With each ten levels comes a new milestone; one hundred more skill levels, and one more skill slot.
In order to level-up in SAO, you need to spend EXP, which is gained through posting. The cost to level-up is different each time; prices can be found here
LEVEL SKILL SLOTS MAX SKILL LEVEL 1 4 100 10 5 200 20 6 300 30 7 400 40 8 500
From there, the table continues until level 100 has been reached.>> the composite levelsBeside each level (displayed as L in the mini profile), is a second number in brackets. This number represents the combination of both your equipment's level overall (the sum of each item you have equipped) and your character level in a combination that we call 'composite level'. Your composite level will help determine your character’s basic and overall power level. There are exceptions to this rule, however. Character and skill level take more importance. A level 6 character with a c-level of 25 (mostly based on their armor) will, more than likely, be considerably more powerful than a level 3 character with a c-level of 27. This level 3 character will provide more of a challenge to defeat, but the level 6 player will most likely have more powerful skill levels in their weapon and armor category, which is the largest determining factor of the victor in battles.>> skills and slotsSkills are divided into four categories; Offensive, Defensive, Passive and Non-Combat. Here's a small definition of what each of these words mean:
OFFENSIVE. Offensive Skills are the skills that dictate what weapons the player can use. A higher skill in a weapon means that a player can equip a better weapon, to put it very simply. A higher skill also means a lower cost on upgrading your Sword Arts- more information on Sword Arts and how to upgrade them can be found HERE.
DEFENSIVE. Defensive Skills are the skills that dictate how good your defenses against attacks are. There are many different ways to defend against an attack in SAO, going from armor to simply dodging and many more. Defensive Skills also rule over the armor skills (heavy, light, leather and shield).
PASSIVE. Passive Skills are a bit more unique, as they are not necessarily directly related to combat, nor are they related to non-combat techniques. A simple explanation for them is that they are described as skills that increase your ability; whether it be sight, or speed, or even the ability to fall gracefully. They give little boosts to the natural abilities.
NON-COMBAT. Non-Combat Skills are something that any old Joe could master. They are related to the arts of crafting, performance, and mercantile.
More information on these skills will be able to be found in the SKILLS LIST, or you are welcome to ask a moderator for more clarification.>> skill levelingIn order to level up skills, players must first level up their actual character. With every level earned, a player receives a pool of skill points that may be distributed into core skills, supplementary skills, and extra skills. Additionally, a few skill points may occasionally be dropped as rewards from quests and events.
Points do rollover and may be saved if you do not have enough skills or if you wish to use them later. All additional skill points can be seen at the top of your inventory.
A level 1 character can only have skills level 10 and below. This number increases by 10 every level. There is a HARDCAP of 100 skill levels per 10 character levels. The exception to this is specialized skills.
Characters are allowed to choose one specialized core skill and one specialized supplemental skill which allows them to add up to, but not exceeding, 10 additional points to those particular skills. Once chosen, these specialized skills may not be changed without a skill specialization reset, purchasable in the bazaar. These skills lose any additional points if the skill level exceeds the normal level cap and the extra points will not be refunded. You may select these specialized skills by upgrading in the bazaar.
As an example, Mary chose to specialize in one-handed swords and is presently at level 3. Players typically cannot exceed their level tier. In this case, Mary's skill levels would be capped at level 30. But for one-handed swords, she can add up to 10 additional points if she wishes. Mary has 15 core skill points in her skill pool and decides to add 8 of those skill points to one-handed swords. She now has a skill level of 38 in one-handed swords while her remaining core skills are all level 30 or under.
In order to maintain order within the bazaar, players must decide how they would like their points distributed during character level ups, now provided in the level up template. Additionally, if players have 5 or more extra points to spend on their skill(s), they may request to level up their skills in the bazaar. Once your character has been accepted, go to the bazaar and decide how you would like your first set of skill points to be distributed.
All skills start at level 1 so to upgrade to level 25, for example, it costs 24 skill points.
