Vayne was born in Japan 17 years before SAO was introduced. His father, a British national, who was appointed as a liaison to the British government, had to relocate along with his wife, Japanese, and baby Vayne to London. Vayne grew up a youthful boy. He was smart and very good in sports, but he did show obvious signs of intense competitiveness with his peers.

Vayne lived a quiet life in London until one day his father came home stating that they were going back to live in Japan. Vayne did not like the idea, but it was his father's wishes to do so, in turn, he did not complain. Vayne arrived in Tokyo 1 week before the release of SAO, with feelings of resentment at the sudden move back.

Vayne thought that the only good thing that came about their move was that he was in time for the release of sword art online. He jumped into the game as soon as he could, but his life shattered upon hearing that they cannot get out. Vayne, instead of wallowing, he set out immediately to get stronger and beat the game.
