Xia's Sweet Strike art is designed primarily as a sneak attack. This art is activated when Xia taps a finger on the handle of her dagger twice. The art itself is just one swift upper swipe of her blade against an opponent. However, if the blow lands, the blow will give the opponent a minor stun.

Gengetsu is an art designed for close-range combat only. The user activates this art by sliding their finger along the base of their dagger. The dagger glows and the blade increases its length by two feet and curves further into a crescent shape. This allows for more reach at an angle.

Xia is the daughter of a Japanese father and Chinese mother. She grew up in a refined Tokyo suburb where no one quite understood how to say her first name, usually calling her 'Shia', and where the other house wives were not shy about their comments towards her mother's nationality. School was the only place that made sense to Xia, but even then she met people just like the house wives of her neighborhood: pretentious and unwilling to accept a part of Xia that she could not undo. It did not help her case that she was small as a child and wore glasses with lenses too big for her face. Still, she had friends and she was happy in spite of the typical elementary school bullies who tried to make her childhood less than pleasant.

Xia lived a relatively average life up until she entered high school. She was part of a tiered school, where going from the kindergarten to an affiliated college was not only guaranteed but expected. As such, she knew and dealt with the same people at school for the majority of her life. And although her parents had started arguing more during her middle school days, and the bullies still liked to use her for sharpening their claws, Xia didn't feel as if her life was very different from everyone else. She was happy, more or less, though sometimes she did wish she could be invisible.

During the summer before she entered her second year of high school, Xia and her parents got into a terrible car accident. Her father had been drinking at a party and had seemed okay to drive. However, the roads had been slick with rain and the car slid on a sharp turn. The car wrapped around a tree. Miraculously, both her parents escaped with broken bones - her mother's neck had been thrown out - but Xia was not so lucky. Her side had been hit the hardest by the tree, causing severe damage to her spinal chord. She became a paraplegic, wheelchair-bound for life.

When Xia started her school year the majority of her classmates were sympathetic. However, since her school was not designed for someone with her limitations, everyone started to feel burdened with having to help her up stairs and with classes she might miss. Xia began to feel increasingly isolated, depressed, and bitter; it began to show in her personality and, eventually, she began to drive others away from her. Growing evermore withdrawn, she stopped attending school altogether and began to develop into a hikikomori.

Xia's parents eventually divorced and she began to live with her mother, who indulged Xia's desire to never leave her room. Her mother had grown tired of fighting her. Xia used the internet and MMORPGs as her main source of interaction and 'human contact'. She eventually got a job telecommuting as a game reviewer on a popular gamer's blog. Her games and subscriptions were also reimbursed by her employers, but she saved up especially for Sword Art Online.

When she first logged into Sword Art Online, she was overjoyed: she could 'walk' again, in a manner of speaking. However, when she tried to run, she found that she immediately fell and could not move her legs for a while. While the game could override her physical condition and let her walk, Xia cannot run or even jump. So when she was told, along with every user, about their dire predicament she panicked for her life in a new way: that she wouldn't last if she couldn't run away from a bad situation. This fear drives her to do rather unkind things in the game. Xia's main priority is looking out for herself.
