I've asked a couple of different people this question, and nobodies been entirely sure enough to give an answer, so now its here.

Lets use, for example a character who has skills in One Handed Swords and Martial Arts, and is using a One Handed Sword as his weapon.

If he decided to punch something then with his free hand, how is the working out of the damage handled?

Likewise, if he chooses to forgo the sword entirely and just punches and kicks things; how is the damage handled?

That's all I can think of concerning my original queries, so their might be a couple follow up questions to these - but for now, these two points are my big ones.

If the player has the skill, it still offers some damage compared to if the player does not have the skill, though.

So the damage kind of scales up with higher martial arts skill, at a slower rate?
And, for the sake of the One Handed Sword User, if he owned a Martial Arts weapon like gloves would he need to put away the sword completely and put those on instead if he did want to fight as a 'proper' Martial Artist?

For full damage, yes. He would need to put away the sword completely and put those on instead. However, it is still possible to use Martial Art Sword Arts while another weapon is equipped so long as the description does not conflict. Damage scales similarly to other weapons.
